Lockdown Dinners

Eric’s - Fish and Chip Restaurant in the coastal village of Thornham, North Norfolk Eric’s is hands down the best fish and chips in town, a firm favourite for all our family members!  There is truly something for everyone. We love grabbing a picnic bench in the large garden and dining al fresco, just how fish and chips are meant to be eaten. The ingredients are locally sourced and all dietary requirements can be met so no one need miss out. In my humble opinion, the most key things to fish and chips, is the freshness of the fish, quality of the batter and not too greasy a chip – well here the chips are cooked in beef dripping to perfection, the batter is crispy and light and the fish so very fresh. The menu here is extensive, there is truly something for everyone. The portions are big (and I mean BIG), you will certainly walk away feeling that you got your money's worth. My family find it almost impossible to choose one dish from the menu and almost always opt for the pick ‘n mix option. For me, this is what takes the restaurant from great to outstanding. This option provides you with the most delicious smorgasbord, I love that this really encourages the children (and sometimes adults too) to try new things. The arancini and battered gherkins are to die for, the battered sausage and cod bites disappear in seconds and the chips are so good, the children wolf them down in almost silence - a rarity in our household. Aside from the menu, one of the serious perks of this place is that the kids are kept entertained by the ping pong tables they have set up. This place is a favourite for many in the area, we can almost always guarantee that we will bump into someone we know (in North Norfolk this happens a lot), the kids can dine with their friends before enjoying a game of ‘competitive’ (we’ll call it that) ping pong – a perfect way to use up some of their energy and a chance for us parents to have a catch up in relative peace! In the summer there is an ice cream bar, a serious treat. The ice creams are served with little jars of sweets, there are also chocolates and plenty of sauces available, perfect for a little DIY sundae. Inside is modern, but at the same time, the owners' Eric and Lydia have managed to retain the feel of a traditional fish and chip shop. It is minimalistic, spacious, and provides that instant happy feeling when you walk in -  I am sure this is partly down to the intoxicating smell of salt and vinegar, and my imminent meal! They have really paid attention to detail; I adore the 'instagrammable' pinboard-style menus! Your meal comes served in a sturdy (fully recyclable) branded box, so if you don’t have time to take advantage of the restaurant and garden, or are stopping by after a day on the beach, you can get your food home without the soggy chip paper option many other places provide. Eric’s is the perfect treat for any night of the week on the coast – I highly recommend you plan a trip to one of the nearby beaches to work up an appetite beforehand – did I mention the portions are big?! If you can’t make it along to Thornham, you will also find their sister restaurants in Holt, Norfolk and St Ives, Cambridgeshire.
